I assume this job would involve telecommuting or working at the Richmond office at least twice per week and hopefully 3 times per week. There was a guy in my office who lived in Richmond and worked in DC who used to telecommute 3 days per week. He also worked a very early schedule (i.e. he'd arrive by 6 AM and leave at 2/2:30 PM).

Another transit option would be to drive to the Fredericksburg area and use VRE to one of the Virginia stations served by WMATA (Crystal City is probably the best option, but Alexandria King Street or Franconia/Springfield are also options - the transfer walk would be shorter for those two stations) and then use the WMATA Blue and Silver Lines to the Tyson's Corner area. VRE would provide a more flexible long distance rail option than Amtrak, and you'd still have Amtrak as a fallback if you worked late or missed the last VRE train because it serves Fredericksburg.

If this job is really worth it,

I'd first advise trying to relocate closer to Tysons Corner(even though you said this isn't possible). Alternatively if you can easily afford it rent a room or studio in the DC area(it will def be a price shock compared to anything in the Richmond area though)

If you must do a straight commute the vanpool is prob your best bet. Still I'd only do it 3 days a week max as coming up and down 95 any time of day is hellish.

Sure it would be a pain, but I wouldn't call it hellish considering the distance and that you can take the express lanes all the way from Stafford to Tysons, avoiding most traffic (all of the long distance van pools I heard of leave early too). If OP does a vanpool, I would recommend not traveling Fridays. No problem now, but he/she will be glad when the summer rolls around.
