I was reading the blotter and seems that stolen license plates are very common in the crime reports, I was wondering if there is a bigger issue that we are not aware of.

No, it's the same across the Potomac. Steal someone's tags, put them on the (probably stolen) car you're going to use in a crime and you've created a couple different rabbit holes for investigators to follow.

I worked with a guy who had his tags stolen. He wasn't going to do anything but I strongly encouraged him to report it. A couple months later the tags were used on a car in some crime in Charles County. He was called as a witness in the trial to testify that those had benn his tags and were stolen.

They are not always used on stolen cars or even to commit crimes. Some people just can't get a license, tags or insurance so they take someone else's tags to use. They know the chances of a tag being run by LE is pretty slim.

How could you not do anything? You can't drive a car without tags, and you can't get replacement tags without reporting it. Was he just going to put his car in the garage and not drive it?

I'd imagine it would come in useful for dodging all the automated tolls too. Slap someone else's plates on a car and they get the bill. Good way to ruin someone's day.

I have no idea. Just the rear tag was stolen so I think he figured he'd just move the front one to the back.
