That's a proposal from a Democrat, which has about as much chance of passing as the 5.3 percent raise that was proposed for this year.

The President's proposal will be a 1.9 percent raise.

Lol, if they removed COLA from current employees, DC and some other areas would be vacated, and good luck getting anyone to want to work in those places. But luckily, it seems it is just for retirees.

Because working for the feds generally sucks in many agencies. A motivated person comes in and some careerist sucks the life out of them within a year with the never ending bureaucracy they seem to fight to preserve.

I think that's a tad bit of a generalization, but I do think it's true to some extent.

Government work is not sexy. At least where I am. It doesn't hold the allure that the under-30 crowd is looking for. I've got two "kids" under 30. They are very interested in NPOs now and jobs that have more socialability.

My son has an internship this summer at an NPO and I can see that it is much more interesting and invigorating that if he took a government internship. Plus these private companies and NPOs have way more flexibility to provide the perks that the younger set likes. The government has pretty much NOTHING "fun" to offer them. This generation has a much different mind set about what a job should be about. Much different that what my expectations were 30 years ago. It's not right or wrong, just different.

As a "careerist" I'm really happy to get a young, motivated person in and I do what I can but there's only so much I can do within the constraints of the rules. And on the flip side, some of the young, "motivated" people get here and, well, they are not all that motivated so I don't think we are getting the best ones hired. The private companies are...because they can pay.
