It's about 7 or 8 miles, but how long is the drive from the general area of Fair Oaks Mall to Vienna Metro Station during rush hours via 66?

Do not take 66east

Take Route 50 to Rt 29 to nutley
Or
Take Main St to Jermantown Rd to Lee Hwy to the Vienna station

Either routes are 25 mins or so

If you take 66, total crap shoot. Could be an hour with an accident

^^^ That's all good. Don't take 66 at all. Leave it for those folks from out west who don't have a choice. I'd have said 25 minutes from the Fair Oaks area as well, especially if you leave on the early side, which would be a good idea anyway to be sure of getting a parking spot.

I agree that 66 in that stretch is terrible. But still, check google maps or something before you leave. Sometimes 66 will be light and it will be faster than taking local. This usually happens on Mondays. It also helps if you can get on 66 from the east side of 50 by going on Shirley Gate.

An hour on 66 for that trip would be way out of the ordinary. But the time of day was not specified and makes a big difference

In evening rush hour, 66 might work just fine. In morning? Not as well. I'd use Waze and take the back roads.

This from own years of daily veteran personal experience using I66 on commuter buses during rush hours. In the mornings, before 6am, seldom much if any delay with 90-95% of time smooth sailing. Try it an hour later, it can be several minutes to more than 1/2 hour just to get to I66 eastbound using the long ramp from US50 eastbound, and on the worst days traffic is backed up on US50 the length of the mall. In the afternoons, 4:30pm to 6:30pm, traffic is usually very slow (5-15 mph) from Vienna Metro to just past the 123 exit (mile marker 59-60), unless there has been an accident before Vienna on I66 or on the Beltway holding all that traffic back. Sometimes, not always, the leftmost HOV lane that is not barrier separated, required HOV2 car occupancy, runs some better but not at 55mph. As another suggested, check for red and black lines on I66 on Google Maps as venture out.

i would take50 to jermantown rd to chain bridge rd then turn on nutley st. 20-30 mins depending on traffic on 50 and 123, but it shouldnt be too bad in the oakton area of 123 so you should be able to reach vienna and turn onto nutley.

It's generally a bad idea to be on 123 in either direction during rush hour in the Vienna/Oakton area. There are plenty of alternatives to try, one of which would be to continue off Jermantown across 123 onto Blake Lane and then turn left at Sutton Road, Saintsbury Drive, or even Lee Highway.
