Hi all,

I'll be moving to Northern VA from NY in a couple weeks and I will be purchasing a car immediately as I can't take my current one. My question is, am I able to have a car titled, registered, and insured in VA while being licensed out of NY until I actually trade it in for a VA license?

Thanks!

Oh well you are about to get a lesson in Virginia car property taxes, unless you already are aware.
We want to get you on our tax rolls as soon as possible so you are supposed to tranfer everything relatively quickly, but you get a few months. If you are not aware of our car tax, it can be a jolt to unsuspecting newcomers, so keep that in mind when purchasing a new vehicle.

I am not sure the details but if you know what locality you are moving to, they all have web pages that describe the steps, because the car tax is a local tax so they want to assist you very much.

PS- Welcome to NoVA!

Yup I'm aware of the unfortunate personal property tax, don't want any surprises lol. I'm likely going to be in Centreville so I would have to pay through Fairfax County if I'm not mistaken.
