We recently had our roof replaced by

We also received a quote from Nu Look Home Design. They're ridiculously expensive even with the sales they're always advertising on WTOP. Don't bother with them unless you have extra money you want to part ways with.

Interesting that you are posting this right now -- because in the next few days I am having the roof of my SFH in Reston replaced, and just went through the experience of trying to find a good company to do the work.
Using Washington Consumer Checkbook (my bible for finding home services, and I've never been disappointed with any contractor that gets excellent reviews on Checkbook), I contacted four highly rated roofing companies. All were family owned operations, not the big national chains that spend a fortune advertising with prices to match. What was interesting was that there was a difference of several thousand dollars from the highest to the lowest bid for essentially the same amount of work and quality of material.
The company I chose is right in your backyard -- St. Joseph's in Herndon (
St. Joseph's Roofing Inc. | Roof Contractor | Northern VA & MD ). Their bid was actually the second least expensive I received, not the cheapest, but there were a few factors that swung it for me. St. Joseph's sends potential clients a detailed slide presentation of the entire roofing process and what to expect. The estimator who came out did a great job providing information and writing up a detailed assessment of the roof's current condition and the work to be done, complete with photos, so I know exactly what I'm getting and what to expect. I also liked that the company seemed very attuned to my particular concerns (in my case, preventing damage to mature landscaping around the perimeter of the house), and that the company's roofers are its own employees, not sub-contractors.
By the middle or end of next week I expect the roofing work to be done, weather permitting, and if you're interested will be glad to provide you with an 'after-action' report of how it all went.
