Retiring to the SC coast and looking for a reliable mover with reasonable pricing and reviews:

NO CARS
2 BEDROOM TOWNHOME
PACKING AND UNPACKING
APPROXIMATELY 7,000 LBS
NEED STORAGE 30-60 DAYS

Low estimate from a small local guy - $5,000
Highest from Atlas - $9,600

Looking for others - any help appreciated (on a fixed budget)

Use the Uhaul movers to load for $500, then rent a Uhaul for a few hundred then Uhaul storage for $100 and Uhaul unload for $500. All in for well under $2k with a little work on your end but it's a 2br so probably not much.

You get what you pay for, especially with movers.

Absolutely. My low-budget moving experience was a blanking nightmare. Never again. And they are almost all practically un-sueable because of major lobbying efforts on the part of the industry.

Not necessarily.

OP.

Call Randall in Manassas. We moved from Manassas to the Shenandoah Valley back in 2015. I relied on a friend with the enforcement side of DOT and he had access to the system where moving companies are tracked for complaints and so on. When I asked him to look at Randall, who I liked after talking to them, he did and said to stand down as he needed to check them out as the reviews were very suspicious. He said it appeared they may have been one of the Russian companies where fake reviews were boosting them. After a few days he called me back and said this company was legit and he had never seen this high of a rating. When they came out he gave us a price $2000 lower than the big guys around NOVA to include one I did some training for and they said they'd give me a special price. Randall underestimated the weight to my home and had to bring in a 2nd one. They ate the added costs except for the fuel costs. I know a real estate agent now recommending them due to my experience and their customers are very happy. I'd use them again in a heartbeat.

Yes, you are right. I didn't mean to insinuate you should always pick the highest price. But you should never pick a mover by just looking for the lowest price. As you did, doing research is key.
