The Clarendon-Ballston corridor is popular with 20/30somethings who like to party without having to head over to DC.

Default Some ideas

Try Meetup.com site. You can find people who share your interests/hobbies/etc. Just enter your zipcode. There's a plethora of activities and they are all in this area as well as D.C. Worth looking into. Whole Foods used to have wine tastings on Wednesday night's but I'm not sure if they're still doing them. Still, there are a lot of local events around here. Welcome to the area

Depending on the kind of crowd you're trying to meet, maybe join one of the young benefactors clubs (Smithsonian, Kennedy Center). Or if you're athletic, one of the area's many rugby clubs (good for social and professional contacts). You can google "dc happy hour spreadsheet" for a comprehensive guide to the bar scene (at least it was comprehensive a year or two ago). Good luck.
