I just got a job near the long branch creek/arlington ridge area of South Arlington. I am having a hard time finding much on apartment rental rates in/near that area. Does anyone know if that is an "affordable area" (relatively speaking of course) or would I be better off trying to commute in through the metro?

South Arlington is cheaper than North Arlington. There are a lot of high-rise type apartments in Pentagon City / Crystal City. Shirlington is also a very popular place that will probably cost a little less. Garden style apartments are plentiful in that area as well. I'd expect you could find something anywhere from $1000-1600.

I have friends living in the Park at Arlington Ridge. It's fairly affordable and they really like it there. You could also look in Shirlington or in Alexandria near King & 395. It's a pretty easy commute from there.

S. Arlington defined as 22204 or 22206 is generally cheaper (with some exceptions of course). But 22202's (Arlington Ridge/Aurora Hills - Addison Heights has smaller, cheaper houses and lots), which you might not define as "South Arlington") prices for owner-occupied residences are largely comparable to those for comparable homes in North Arlington (check it out on franklymls.com or other sites). This is likely due to 22202's very close proximity to the District and quick commute up 110 or GWPkway (e.g., versus parts of 22205 and 22207, for which distance and stoplights/signs add to the commute), and due to two metro stations in the area (Pentagon City and Crystal City) and VRE station at Crystal City. The rental options also are likely to be comparably priced for comparable apartments, although several PC and CC high rises are older and cheaper than some of the nice new options in Clarendon and elsewhere.

Good luck with your search!
