What's the weather like in the winter? How long does the cold last?
What time is sunrise and sunset?
I love clear sunny days. Is winter full of dark overcast days or lots of sun?

I saw lots of sun....in the past years our coldest is usually in Jan and feb but lately we had some unusually cold days this early in the season..... But most of the worse stuff happens the closer we get to Spring....

Either way cold weather is cold weather to me whether its sunny or dismal I hate it either way! lol

Extremely variable. Some years are pretty mild, others have one blizzard after another. Some years it's mostly sunny, other years it's mostly grey and sleety. In the last few years the biggest storms have hit in Feb/March, but this year they may hit in December and winter will be mostly finished by the end of January. If you're moving here, be prepared for anything--but even the worst snow storms are usually no more than 2-3 feet of snow at a time. So Virginia is minor league compared to places like upstate NY or Minnesota.

There's no such thing as a strictly defined winter in these parts. The coldest months are Dec-Feb, but they are tolerable. Snow may happen, and it may not. Usually not that much. The sun shines, too -- most days. What I love about this area is that it could be really cold one day with some snow and then be a balmy 70 degrees the next.

Where are you from? That will factor in how "harsh" you find Virginia winters.

I moved to NoVA from Georgia. There was a lot more snow than I was used to but it was cyclical. Some years lots of snow (by my calculations, as a southerner). Some years, not so much. I did find, however, that every single winter was marked by at least one decent snowfall.

Sunrise & Sunset really aren't wildly different than they were in parts of Atlanta. Maybe a little earlier. You can find a Farmer's Almanac or sunrise/sunset page with Google and put in a zip code to get specifics.

I moved away from Virginia after 14 years back down to the south, in no small part because I did not like the winters. Virginia is on the very edge of what I would consider 'acceptable' for winter weather. I now know I could not handle living much farther north. It is not, however, anything like Boston or NYC. It's a good "starting place" for figuring out how much you can take colder weather.

Virginia winters are fairly mild relative to a place such as New England. We have days in the 20s and 30s, and some snow. But the snow is usually limited to at most a few inches and typically melts within a day or two (bummer for me, cause I love snow).

It's not unusual for the temps to be in the 40s and 50s. So it's not the winter that's extreme here. It's the dang summers that I can't stand. August in D.C. Yeee uck.

Winter at the end of the day is really relative especially here in VA. To me it's been pretty cold. Also coming from Georgia to me a cold winter day is when it doesn't get below 60 even in the afternoon. Here it hasnt' been below 60 in like two weeks. Which is odd for wintertime.

I was pumping gas at the corner of 236 and Backlick Rd. in 1980, before the electronic credit approval. One February day, my ballpoint pen froze solid. You really couldn't have any skin exposed.

I think the last big snow fall (2 or 3+ feet) we got was in Jan or Feb 2003. The one before that was in the mid 90's. Big storms are just rare enough to be kind of fun. They happen maybe once or twice in a decade.

Temperatures are normally around 20-40/50 degrees but can get into the low teens and even single digits. Some years seem to be colder than others.
