My wife and I are looking at some townhomes in Occoquan... any thoughts? Prices are reasonable and the commute to Springfield where we work would be better than from Woodbridge (though only slightly).

Just wondering if anyone has any compelling reasons as to why buying a home in Occoquan would not be a good thing.

Thanks!

Would you have your own parking?

Occoquan is a beautiful area with quaint shops along the water and then you can also look at some newer homes/townhomes on the east side of 95 and Rt1 if you are looking for the waterfront with newer homes and parking. Since it is close to 95 and Rt 1 it would give you easy access for commuting north or south. Best of luck!

I think it would be a nice spot too. The only reason I asked about parking was because of the craft festivals they hold twice a year.

Very nice and close to everything. Just like anywhere else in the area, traffic stinks during rush hour. The town itself is very nice though. And if you have a boat, it's got that covered as well!!!

Also, the regional park there is gorgeous. Scenic views of the river, and also an interesting historic site where the jail once stood. (The jail was most famous for housing suffragettes. I forget the exact story but it's compelling.)

I would love to see someone here do a photo tour of Occoquan. It's such a cute town.

It is a relatively crime free town. Notice I didn't say crime free. No place is. Parking/crowds (huge crowds) appear during the Occoquan days so having your own parking is good. Might want to block it off or at least put signs there during this event. Not many restaurant choices there but you are close enough to others so not a big deal there. It is a nice place and you are close to I 95 which of course means a lot of traffic in the area. The town has had its own police department for years and I assume they still do. I retired from PWCPD last year so I don't know what changes, if any, may have occurred there. PWCPD handles major cases there and patrol there on a regular basis as it's assigned to officers from each shift.

The park and the old Lorton prison are actually across the river from the town. The lorton prison is now an arts center: Workhouse Arts Center

There's not much to do in the town itself as it's pretty small. Mom's Apple pie is there and they really have some great baked goods. The festivals they through during the year does close down traffic into it.

Commuting options are good. You have access to two big commuter lots and the Woodbridge VRE station is just a bit further south off Route 1.
