Last year the police budget was cut, and the crime rate went up correspondingly.

Can you provide a link to this information? I've been looking, and I'm getting bogged down with info. Thanks!

Their own data must have been false to justify their existence.

From what I can tell on the Fairfax County Budget & Management website, the police budget has gone up over the last 3 years. So I'm not sure what budget cuts you speak of.

That was an issue during the special election for the chairman of the Board. It had a lot of coverage then. The Board members were clearly aware of it since they declined to support the additional cuts to the police budget that were initially proposed by the County Executive.

For FY2010, both the police & fire budgets are dropping by about $10M each - public safety is dropping by ~$18M total (sheriff going up). Parks & recreations is dropping by about $11M total. Public safety comprises 13.2% of the total budget so far, and will drop to 12.8%. Parks/rec/libraries currently at 2.5%, will drop to 2.2%.

So do they want to take another $18M out of parks/rec/libraries to completely negate any proposed cuts? Or just some of it?

Edited to add: Maybe those figures are in billions...I'm confusing myself.

It is ironic that when economic times get tough, more and more people flock to libraries ... to borrow (rather than buy at Borders), to research (jobs, new careers, do-it-yourself projects), and to go online (when they can't afford - or can no longer afford - Internet access at home).

When times are easy, many people look upon libraries as "nice", but when times are tough, many people show what they feel about the importance of libraries through their increased use of them.

It's exactly when times are tough that tough decisions have to be made, and when local governments aren't - or can't - bring in the same level of revenue, then something's gotta give. And I think many/most of us would choose to cut public health and safety last, and "extras" such as libraries and parks first.

Are you looking at the proposal or the final numbers? They finalized it yesterday. I don't know whether yesterday's actions have been posted yet.

Proposed. I didn't think the final budget comes out until the 27th, like GreenGene posted.

Here's where I got it from - the "dumbed down" version!
