I saw a stone buried along the pathway between Riverbend Park and Great Falls National Park. It's a little bit north of the spillway. It's very old, looks like it might be a grave marker. It's a plain stoned that has carved onto it "W.A.E. XXII"

Maybe it's a marker for a county line or something for the electric company? (Just a wild guess, but could W.A.E. stand for Washington Area Electric?)

Anybody know?

Sure sounds like it. Now if we could only figure out what the mystery carving means.

Thanks for the link, I've been meaning to try geo-caching for a few years now. I hike that trail all the time, looking for treasure would put a new spin on it. What sort of treasures do you find, anyway?

I happened upon a geocache one day while walking my dog with my nephes and niece and looked into it. I let them take a toy but the rule was that you had to add something back. They put one of their little toys back into it. We also signed the log.

It's something that I want to try to do more often, but like all things too little time. It sure sounds like a fun activity though. Also it's a free activity and the kids got a kick of finding a hidden treasure box.

It's the location somewhat near the spillway that makes me think it has something to do with an Electric Company. But I've never heard of a company with the initials W.A.E.

It could be a gravestone, but it's small for something like that. Could W.A.E. have been somebody's pet that lived to the age of 22? But maybe not, an engraved stone is kind of fancy for a pet marker, IMO.

Well, if you believe the plots of movie like "National Treasure" this stone is a secret clue left by George Washington himself.

When you figure out what WAE XXII means you will find a spooky staircase hidden in plain sight right there next to the trail. It leads to the secret Masonic temple underneath Great Falls Park.

That's interesting. Now I'm curious what it stands for.

We've been geocaching for 4 years now and still have a blast. We started about a month after moving here. It didn't cost much with the exception of paying for gas, kept us out of the house and busy all day on a weekend, and we learned our way around the area! That was one of the big reasons for us to start. We've found all sorts of things in the containers. If you want to take something, you're more than welcome to as long as you leave something in its place. And don't forget to sign the log! Accounts at geocaching.com are free.

We hiked the Riverbend Trail yesterday so I had to stop and look for the mysterious W.A.E. xxiii stone. I asked the rangers at the Great Falls Museum what it was, and showed them the photo, but nobody there knew either. What a mystery!

The craving looks rather modern doesn't it.

On the topic of geocaching, another option is Mailboxing, which is the same thing without the GPS stuff. We have really been having a good time with it, there are clues to follow. And it keeps my 7 year old happy when we do what she considers forced marches in NATURE (imagine that said in the snotty tone only a kid can produce)

LOL, I had a 7-year-old like that, too.
