In general, anywhere in Loudoun County is too far for a regular commute into DC. Even the bus will be as much as (and on snow and other really bad days, more than) two and a half hours per day, not including whatever commute you may have to do to get between the bus and home. And if you suddenly need to get back to Leesburg when the bus isn't scheduled, it's about an $80 cab ride.

I lived in Leesburg and commuted to L'enfant Plaza for a while. The commute is not that bad... I took the Loudoun County Transit bus. These buses run at all times of day and have various drop off and pick up points. I was an early bird and usually took the bus that left around 7:00 am and caught the one back home that picked up around 3:45 or so.

It would usually take about 45 minutes to an hour. The only bad part was when something bad happened downtown... like the shooting that happened at one of the museums a few years ago and closed down the streets in the afternoon. The buses were cut off from my pick up spot and I had to run halfway across town to catch a bus. But 90% of the time they are on time and ran smoothly.

I once worked with a guy who commuted in on the bus from Leesburg to the stop closest to Metro Center where we worked. I believe he was on the bus for more than an hour - and I imagine getting to the lot from his home stretched that out to an hour and a half - but apparently it was worth it to him and his family for the lifestyle they were seeking. And he was far from alone on that bus. While it's not something I would want, your mileage may literally vary.

Speaking of which, back in the early 70's, I used to park at the Tysons Park-and-Ride and take a 7:50 express bus downtown. Three well-spoken, well-educated airline guys in their nifty blue uniforms rode that bus every day as well headed down to their offices near 16th and K. They all lived in West Virginia. Carpooled to Tysons and hopped on the bus. They were happy as clams.

Hey I have people in my office in Springfield that live in Stafford, Haymarket and Fredericksburg... a commute from Leesburg would be almost heaven to them. The one guy that lives in Stafford gets to work at 6:30 and leaves at 2:30 but I think it takes him like 2+ hours one way... he takes a van pool so they get to use HOV but still... I could never do that. An hour is the max I'll tollerate.

They really just need to rebuild the W&OD Railroad out to Leesburg or Purcellville so Loudoun County can have a REAL transit system.

I think that's a great idea and good for my property values but it's never going to happen.

Stations and parking would have to be built and don't forget all the places it crosses roads.

It won't happen because Metro is being built to Ashburn.

Oh, I know that; just a shame someone didn't think of this about 25 years ago before the massive development and the train could have worked.
