I like going down to Staunton. Stay overnight in the fancy hotel (I think it's called the Andrew Jackson?) There are some quaint little diversions along the way. For example, you can stop and take your photo next to a statue of Johnny Appleseed.

We ended up doing this drive in October, when the fall foliage was beautiful. Went on a rainy day so there weren't that many cars on the road. Loved it! We took 7 to wherever and went to visit Dinosaurland too (my son loves dinosaurs). I'd love to do the drive again with more time (maybe 2-3 day trip) and stay in hotels along the way.
