It's no surprise to me that Fairfax County went Republican. It surprises me when they join with Arlington and Alexandria in going Democratic. Ffx Co has only recently turned purple with the influx of people from other states and other countries. And I say this as someone who grew up in Ffx Co always feeling too liberal for my surroundings.

Yeah, but local taxes WILL go up, and soon. **** rolls down hill and local govt is at the bottom of the hill.

Thanks to dear old dad, I pay far, far more in real estate taxes than I do State income taxes.

Which means Nova's the big winner in the long run. The unpredictable places get courted by both sides and get a lot of extra favors. Plus, being unpredictable makes it an interesting place to live.

Congratulations to McDonnell. I hope things work out well with him. I feel optimistic, but also realistic. Let's face it, taxes are going up no matter who's in charge.

I can't find the link right now but from what I've read, Virginia is known mostly as a state whose politics fluctuate from left to right regularly and is generally discounted as an indicator for national trends/swings.

The NJ results OTOH is very interesting!

Agreed. Our election wasn't a political indicator by any stretch of the imagination. Creigh Deeds didn't stand a chance, not because of his party but because he had no solid plans and he ran one of the worst campaigns I've ever seen. Basically all he did was mud slinging. I don't care if you're God's personal candidate, I don't vote for that kind of campaign. It was such a turn off. McDonnell had concrete ideas, and in the end that's what voters care about.

No surprise. I don't live in VA, I'm a Democrat, and even I thought Deeds was a lackluster candidate. He reminds me of John Kerry. Kerry was the guy none of us on the left could get excited about. The best reason we could come up with for voting for him was "he's better than Bush." Same thing happened with McCain. I know lots of Republicans who didn't care for him. So they stayed home on Election Day.

he won it by 2 points, remarkable considering it went for Obama by 20, and Tim Kaine by 23

I firmly believe the only way to keep government in check is to create legislative gridlock, which Virginia has done pretty well over the last 8 years with a Democratic governor and Republican-majority legislature. The last time we had all Republicans was Jim Gilmore, when it seemed ideology took precedence over reality.

Let's hope the GOP has learned from mistakes in the past.

I don't know how to do reps...but your comment deserves a bunch of them!

Gridlock is GREAT!!! Both sides can beat their chests and spew clouds of
CO2, but nothing much happens.

The even more amazing result was the election of Barbara Comstock! She's very conservative and Loudoun's delegation is now all Republican! Seems like the wealth of NoVa has taken a big step to the right!
