3-5 inches in Reston, and with the parking lot now getting coated that may just happen! (Wagging tail!) It's just above freezing here now. How well do they take care of the roads in Fairfax County? This afternoon we had plans to head to Old Town Alexandria for their Christmas parade and to see the boats in the harbor lit up. It's supposed to be mainly rain down that way, so I'm not worried, but up in NW Fairfax County it's going to be mainly snow.

Just looked out my window in West End Alexandria and it's all rain.

Well, Scran, you may just get your wish. Mother Nature is famous for faking out us Virginians and this time the surprise may be in the opposite direction--lots more snow that the weathermen predict. Anyway.... woo hoo!!!!! Look at it coming down! If it keeps up, I might just make a snowman myself.

It's still raining in Alexandria? How funny! It's snowing big time out in Loudoun.

It will stick soon. It was only in the past hour that the snow was sticking to the pavement here in Reston.

I'd modify that to say, if you can, just stay home. It's not whether you can drive in snow or not, it's whether those around you can.

Also, for people who learned to drive in the snow belt, generally speaking we don't get the same kind of snow here - I wish we did.

The crap we're getting this morning is typical - starts as rain, the temperature starts to fall, maybe a little freezing rain, then snow. Later today, and tonight, we could have an inch or two of snow over a thin layer of ice - yikes!

The problem is the area itself - we always seem to be on the edge between rain and snow, and as a result, we get stuff that looks minimal but that can be extremely slick. And when it's that slick, it doesn't matter what you're driving.

I've driven in lots of snow - even a couple of blizzards - in PA, NY, and a good part of New England. Here, I just stay home.

Yup, that's the money quote right there. I grew up in New England and my husband is Canadian - both of us are competent snow drivers. But in NoVA, it's rarely snow driving you're doing - it's more like ice driving, with a sprinkle of snow. And that stuff is dangerous, even for good drivers in good cars. Add in all the fools who think they can drive like it's no big thing simply because there aren't 6 inches of accumulation, and you have a headache!

So would the general consensus be for me to NOT try to drive my friends and I down to Alexandria at around 3 PM? How are the roads looking? My parking lot is covered. I will have to take a stroll out in an hour or two and see how the roads look.

It's starting to stick here on the roads here and traffic is slowing down on 395. So I'd say park the Mazda for tonight.
