Hi,

Our family are moving from Florida to DC. We checked a townhouse on 600 block on North Armistead st, Alex, VA. We liked the house. But we checked the police report, it looks like there were lot of crime instance happened on 500 block Armistead St. And there do have a couple of car break in instance on the 600 block N Armistead st. Is it a safe area for a family with a small baby?

we are in rush of making a decision. Your input will be highly appreciated.

there is a relatively high amount of petty crime, mostly in the form of car break-ins (a much lesser amount of actually stealing the car), in that area, occasional burglaries. There are a couple of huge low-moderate-income rental communities within a half a mile of that location. That type & level of crime has been pretty constant for many years. Personal crime is lower and tends to occur to pedestrians later at night.

I have a friend who lives in a condo about a half a mile from there and she feels perfectly safe and hasn't had any problems personally.

The end of Armistead you are looking at are townhouses, and the other side (the 600 block) has apartment buildings. The area generally is not a bad one, I have lived/worked/shopped in that area for years. I haven't lived right in that area, but had a friend that lived in a single family around the corner on Ashton St. and they never had any problems that I know of crime-wise.

FYI, you won't need to travel up to the other side of Armistead, you'll just get on Beauregard usually to travel in and out of the area. So I would base a decision more on what is happening on your block and not the next one, as they are pretty different areas and I don't know that there is much crossover into your block. I suspect that there might be some petty property crimes, larcenies out of cars, etc. in that section of townhouses but not any violent crimes that would cause concern for you family. If there aren't many crimes in your townhouse area in the crime data you have I wouldn't sweat it too much.

You might also look at crime in the area you live now in Miami, you might be surprised at the stuff going on in your area that you didn't know about, and it just may not be that big of a deal. Obviously if you aren't comfortable based on what you see, you don't have to make the move.

Hi weezycom and bornidc,

Thanks for your input and it is real valuable. By the way, I do not live in Miami. I believe I will have same concern if I move to Miami.

Thanks again.
