Have you considered using Turbo Tax or those other self prepare applications? I've been using them for the past couple of years and it's been great. You can do the taxes and see what your return will be before you even have to pay. If you don't like the numbers, then you can take it to a tax preparer and see if they can get you more.

sadly I am well beyond Turbo Tax though I'm a big fan if you have a simple tax situation. I am a part year resident, working from a home office 100% of the time, who sold and bought a house last year so I need lots of help
