We are looking to relocate from our current house. ISO a family-friendly neighborhood - a place with nice neighbors, a sense of community, where children regularly play outside. The goal is to buy a 3+ bedroom home for no more than $650K with a decent commute to the Pentagon (35-40 minutes max). Any positive advice/stories would be greatly appreciated!

i dont think i do. i love some of them. i think the disconnect where i live is pretty high. concept of being a good neighbor is minding your own business, this is not only on my block but in church as well. people with money are not always open people.

I love where I live in Mount Vernon. It's like living in the country but very close to civilization. Bald eagles, deer, the river, and lots of trees. You can get a nice house here for the amount you're looking to pay and your commute up the GW Parkway will be pleasant and within your 30-40 minute time parameters. Look in the 22308 or 22309 zip codes for neighborhoods along the parkway. Very family friendly and people here are open to newcomers since there are a lot of them. Many here work at the Pentagon so you could probably find a commute buddy if you want and there's also bus service.

Yes, we do. We live in the 22152 zip code and moved here last spring. We joined the local pool right away and met a lot of people through there. My son is outside a lot. We have had many get together with neighbors and people are always available to help out others. It is a quiet older neighborhood, but it seems like younger families are moving in. The membership at the pool was way up last year over years past. Zip code 22153 is close by.

I'm sick of my current neighborhood which is the Landmark area of Alexandria, so I don't recommend looking here. Some areas to look would be Franconia, Telegraph Rd near Ft. Belvoir, Kingstowne, and maybe North Arlington.

We've noticed the same thing here. We live in an established neighborhood (built in the 60's) and are seeing a lot more families with young children moving in. We have a neighborhood pool which is a great magnet for residents to get together either casually or at planned functions. Would highly recommend finding a neighborhood that has such common amenities as people in such places tend to mingle more.

Are you talking about Southern California? If so, you should come on up to Northern Virginia! There's more than a few of your expatriates here...plus the housing prices won't cause you much sticker shock!

LOL, driving from southern California to the Pentagon everyday? Now that's what I'd call a long commute!

I love my neighborhood (Lowes Island), but it's probably too far to commute to the Pentagon.

LOL, this is so true I'm one of the very few people who moved here and thought "My, the prices are so reasonable!" We had a tiny 1200 sf townhouse in Redondo Beach. Sold it and used the money to buy a brand new 4,000 sf single family home in a nice neighborhood on a big piece of land... and our Nova house was still $5000 less than the townhouse.
