Looking for someplace where you can go swimming and there is sand on the beach for a little kid to play in. Ideas?

Well, it isn't real near, but Lake Anna is about two hours south of you and the Lake Anna State Park has a pubic beach with sand, bath house, snack bar, hiking trails, etc. Here's the link: Lake Anna State Park I think the website says 1 hour from No. VA. From Chantilly it's 85 miles, just under two hours going by way of rt. 29 and depending on traffic, especially around Gainesville.

There's Bear Creek Lake State Park, although it's not exactly close. They have a 40-acre lake with a boat launch, fishing pier, boat rentals and swimming beach, as well as camping, picnicking, playgrounds, hiking and access to a 14-mile multi-use trail.

Bear Creek Lake State Park

That's about all I can think of. Some people swim in Lake Thoreau, but I think you have to live in Reston to swim in the lakes there. Also, some people swim in a few semi-protected coves along the Potomac but I would NOT recommend that if you have small children.

There might be something in the MD mountains. I'm not really sure.

I knew you guys would come up with great ideas. Thank you!! I'll look into all of those and maybe take a few day trips. My son loves the beach but I'm not too crazy about him running straight into the ocean. A lake is more manageable.

Oh, now there you go. Winchester is fairly close. I never knew about this place.

You know, some of the wineries have lakes and they might let you go swimming there. Maybe you could contact Tarara and ask them if they have a policy about it. That would be really close to you.

Lake Holiday outside of Winchester has a beach but it's a private, gated community.

Lake Laura in Bryce Resort has a beach. It's about 100 miles from Ashburn (not close but not a bad day trip).

Lake Anna.

Catoctin Mountain in Maryland has a nice lake.

Some of the Chesapeake Bay beaches are mild with no waves. Sandy Point State Park near Annapolis, MD comes to mind.

I'm excited about this Cove place. I can't believe I never heard of it before. Definitely checking it out this summer.
