Ok, so I'm moving to live w/ my dad and other family members up there. Where I live right now kids don't have to attend their neighborhood school as long as their choosing to go to a magnet school. For the high schools in Loudoun county do you have to attend the school w/in your boundary or can you go to another one and how do you know which school is right for you? How does everything work in Loudoun County and which schools are A, B & C if any and what's the main difference (if any) between all or most of high schools besides location?

Students primarily attend classes on their home campus, but have opportunities to take additional, specialized courses at LCPS's magnet and alternative schools, such as science and math at Loudoun Academy of Science and vocational education classes at C.S. Monroe Technology Center.

Students attending the magnet schools do so every other class day, taking their non-magnet classes (typically core courses, such as English, social sciences and electives) at their home campuses on the alternate days.

First of all, if you know your new address, you can plug it in here and see what school you are zoned for.

You can apply for special permission (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/50990419143321/blank/browse.asp?a=383&BMDRN=2000&BCOB=0&c=54470&5099041 9143321Nav=%7C&NodeID=1744 - broken link) to attend an out-of-boundary school. Here is the official policy with a list of possible criteria for granting special permission. However, many of Loudoun's schools are overcapacity, and some schools are so overcrowded that even special permission won't get you in. For 2010-2011, the high schools that are closed to special permission requests are Broad Run (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/brhs/site/default.asp - broken link), Freedom (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/fhs/site/default.asp - broken link), Potomac Falls (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/pfhs/site/default.asp - broken link), Loudoun Valley (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/lvhs/site/default.asp - broken link), and Stone Bridge (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/sbhs/site/default.asp - broken link). On the other hand , if you are zoned to attend one of these five schools, you may apply for special permission to attend one of the underenrolled high schools; for 2010-2011, these include Heritage (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/hhs/site/default.asp - broken link), Park View (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/pvhs/site/default.asp - broken link), and Woodgrove (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/Woodgrove/site/default.asp - broken link).

Here are maps of the current HS attendance boundaries (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/509905169119/blank/browse.asp?a=383&BMDRN=2000&BCOB=0&c=55408 - broken link). Boundaries for the new schools opening in Fall 2010: Tuscarora HS (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/509905169119/lib/509905169119/SBHS%20Tuscarora%20HS%20Boundaries/TuscaroraHS.pdf - broken link) | Woodgrove HS (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/509905169119/lib/509905169119/SCHOOL_BOARD_ADOPTED_Western_Loudoun_Secondary_4-24-07.pdf - broken link) (HS-3)

As for rankings, here are the county's SAT results for 2001-2009 (http://cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/50990510142757/FileLib/browse.asp?A=374&BMDRN=2000&BCOB=0&C=56866 - broken link); they are broken down by school within each year's document.

Another way to look at each school is by their "school profile" - you will see a link to it on each school's website. (I haven't been able to find one list of links for the entire district.) For example, here is the school profile for Briar Woods HS (http://lcpsprofiles.loudoun.k12.va.us/portal/page/portal/LCPS/HS/SCHOOLENROLLMENT:GRADE?NAME=%22BRIAR%20WOODS%20HIG H%20%22 - broken link). You can see enrollment data, test scores, graduation stats, etc.

Yet another source of comparison data is the state school report card.
