hi all - to those of you who think that all northern VA is planned communities, people and traffic, you need to get out more .

My family discovered this great park yesterday for an Easter picnic and it will be a favorite weekend destination for us for sure. Even though it was filled to capacity (not much parking left available), it was nearly empty because it's just so big. We hung out in front of the old house, picnicked, threw the frisbee and the baseball around, then went on a very strenuous hike up the hill to see the cows. Just idyllic. I recommend it if you're looking to experience VA's real countryside and enjoy a gorgeous day!

Unfortunately the pics on the website really don't do it justice http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/sky.shtml...here's one I took from midway up the hill trail we walked, showing the entire farm out below. Just stunning.

We drove out that way on Saturday but didn't get a chance to take a look. We went to 3 Foxes winery and they have a huge area for picnics, etc. We had lunch on Rt 50 (very close to the park) at the Blackthorne Inn at the Irish pub and the food was great. What a nice little find, and will definitely go back.
Welcome to the Blackthorne Inn

This is one of my favorite places, and you're right that photos don't do it justice.

yup we saw Blackthorne on the way...Hunters Head Tavern is also supposed to be fantastic. We tried to go once but couldn't get in (no reservation on a Saturday night). Gorgeous country.

We went there last fall for a sky gazing evening. Once per month they do an astronomy evening. There is usually a talk, some activities for kids, and people bring their telescopes. We had a lot of fun and plan to take the kids again this year.

It's a great spot, and the astronomy events are great because you're far enough away from city lights.

Here's a link to NOVAC with the schedule: Public Astronomy Viewing in Northern Virginia

And, Astronomy Day is April 24th, this year, so it might be worth a visit: NOVAC - Astronomy Day 2010

The polo events are also fun, and there's a school on the grounds as well.
