Hi,
I had posted before asking for neighborhood information moving from chicago.
I've received lots of valuable advice. Thanks again for all these replies.

Now there have been some changes since my last post. One major change is that we now have decided to rent rather than buy.

Because school is not a top priority in our rental decision, can you give me any suggestion for the potential areas meeting these criteria:

townhouse with two car garage, 3b, 2 bath ideally with yard.
30-45 minutes drive to downtown alexandria
30-45 convenient communting to downtown DC by train
Rental price up to $2000
Safe and kid-friendly, preferrably a quiet subdivision that has or close to playground and/or park.

Thanks very much for your help and time.

I would suggest looking at TH for rent in military by owner and Craig's list.

You could probably find something nice in Kingstowne or Island Creek (zip code 22315), which are nice safe family-type neighborhoods -- you probably won't find two-car garage townhouses, but you would have reserved parking spaces in front of your house.

Alexandria, Kingstowne, Springfield area, Falls Church area...if you can't find a real townhouse for rent, you should be able to find a large size, townhouse style apartment for lease within your price range pretty easily. Take a weekend/weekend and explore the area personally to see what you like best/most.

These following two rental magazine publications may also be very helpful too:

Apartment Showcase.com - Apartments For Rent - Apartment Search in Maryland, Washington DC, Northern Virginia
ApartmentGuide.com - apartments for rent, apartment finder
