The OP shouldn't have to switch tags. The car will just have to be registered with the county.

The OP stated she rents an apartment in Arlington to help with her commute.

Most people work 5 days a week...a day or two certainly wouldn't justify paying the kind of rent that apartments in Arlington command.

I'd bet the OP lives in Arlington all week and spends weekends in Maryland. I think it depends on where you reside MOST of the time. Heck, I've spent weekends at my second home in Marland for years and have never been questioned about my Va plates....because Va is where I reside MOST of the time....

You may be right. When I read that it was just a few days per week I didn't think it meant most of the week, but it does sound like they are in Virginia most of the week.

From the Arlington County web site

-An Arlington County decal is required to be displayed within 60 days of the vehicle's entrance into Arlington or within 60 days of purchasing the vehicle to be located in the County.

-Vehicles registered in Arlington County will be taxed. Vehicles not registered with the Virginia State Department of Motor Vehicles or Arlington County are also subject to tax if the vehicle is normally garaged, stored, or parked in Arlington, with the exception of those exempted by law.

If you rent an apartment in Arlington, there are not enough words in the dictionary to explain to the County how or why you don't live there.

I know someone with a business in Maryland, from which they lease a corporate vehicle. Since the vehicle is used from their house in Fairfax County to Montgomery County, and other areas in the region, the vehicle is garaged in Fairfax each night. As such, they pay personal property tax in Virginia, even though the car is registered in Maryland to the business address, just the same as they do on the family's personal, Virginia-registered, vehicles.

I thought that the county registration/personal property taxes dealt with permanent residents of the State? For example, if the OP only parks the car in Arlington for 3 nights per week then,on average, 3 nights @ 4 weeks per month = 12 days-- not even half of a month. Should she have to pay property tax on something that's parked in Arlington for 12 days each month? How different is that than someone traveling on business and stays at a friend's house or at a hotel 12 days in a month? Should they pay personal property tax also?

OP, someone ratted you out and a uniform letter was sent out. But you need to find out for sure what you need to do. Alot of times the letters are wrong; I once received a nasty letter from Fairfax County and I wasn't even living in Fairfax County--I had already moved out to Loudoun County for 1-2 yrs. Good luck!

Sorry to bring up thist post again, but is the personal property tax due as soon as you register your car, or is it a uniform date that everyone pays on?
