I was told Virginia has over 30,000 homeschoolers and the state itself is very home-school friendly. Are they any areas of Virginia that have large groups, or towns that you would reccomend if we move there?

The Home School Legal Defense Association is in Purcellville (Loudoun County). You could check their website or call them for information. Good luck.

I see sports, activities, lessons - etc - for home school kids at the libraries and the county recs (Fairfax County Rec's have them all the time) so I'd think the Fairfax area would have some more resources - once you're here if you signed up for those events I'm sure you'd meet other parents in the same situation.

I think the Ashburn area has a lot of homeschoolers (there are two families on my street alone). I once commented to a neighbor about how there really aren't many private school options in Loudoun County-her response was that they weren't needed due to all the homeschoolers...

I live in Vienna. There are two homeschoolers on my street. I know one a few blocks away. Someone in my daughter's school decided to homeschool this year. I met a woman while taking a walk who homeschooled last year. And someone in my babysitting co-op homeschools. These are people I know who happen to homeschool - not because I sought any of them out. They are everywhere!

Western Loudoun, near Patrick Henry College. LOTS of homeschoolers! There are at least two large consortia of home schoolers in Loudoun and Clark counties.

Yes, I think that's part of Patrick Henry college which began as a college for home schoolers. Patrick Henry is in Purcellville.

Woodbridge/Lake Ridge in Northern Virginia also has lots and lots of homeschoolers. In terms of recommendations on where to live, it all depends on where your husband's job might be located. The bottom line is that you will find a good number of homeschoolers wherever you end up.
