Alphapha: Post in the Indianapolis forums. Indy is also a great area. The college towns (Lafayette, Bloomington, and Muncie) are always worth considering, but they don't have proximity to airports.

No worse than ISU in Terre Haute.

Rensselaer

I was also quite puzzled by this recommemdation. I
don't know anyone that thinks it's a nicer town than Valpo, and it certainly isn't close to a good airport.

It's a quiet town, good university (RPI) and it's closer to where the OP wanted to live which is Indy. Valpo is 2 hrs on the best days from either Midway or O'Hare. Rensselaer is halfway between ORD or IND. It's faster to go south to Indy than it is to battle Chicago's nightmare.

I moved to Valpo in 1987. Great town. It has a small-town feeling but has the offerings of a larger city. Valpo has excellent restaurants, a couple of great community theatres, excellent school system, plenty of shopping since the east side has been developed. I've never had a problem with the air quality in Valpo; have never seen nor smelled emissions from the mills on the lakeshore. I live in an older house several blocks from the downtown courthouse square. In addition to the trails mentioned by earlier posters, runners often run on my street and the surrounding neighborhood, which provides plenty of shade in the summertime. Another park with shaded paths, which has not been mentioned yet, is Taltree Arboretum in the SW portion of Valpo. There are a LOT of runners, and walkers as well, in Valpo.

Taxes in Porter County (Valpo) are lower than in Lake County (Gary), and car and homeowners insurance is lower than in Lake County as well.

The Lake Michigan beaches are pristine and beautiful, and the water is perfectly safe for swimming. The water is tested daily by NOAA (I believe) for bacteria. If there happens to be a high bacteria day (rare on the Lake Michigan south shore), swimming is prohibited, but I can't remember the last time this has happened in our area. The Indiana Dunes are not only beautiful, but are a great place to get an excellent cardio workout - climbing those dunes ain't easy!

NOAA doesn't test the water. The health department does.

That's the law.
