I found a job in Whiting and am looking to make a move to Northwest Indiana. I am a single male in my upper 20s. Here are some of the towns I am considering:

Whiting
Schererville
Portage
Hobart
Valparaiso
LaPorte

I've done quite a bit of research but still having a hard time figuring it out.

Can anyone give me some pros/cons of each of those towns? I've heard good things about Valpo, but would it be worth the 45 min + commute to live there?

You're a single guy? Heck, move to Whiting.

Great commute to work.

Close to Chicago for nightlife.

Pierogie-Fest.

The commute from Valpo to Whiting will kill you. If you had a family and kids, I would recommend Valpo - but for a single guy? Stay in Whiting.

Pierogie Fest is enough of a reason alone to live in Whiting LOL.

LaPorte will be too far--and there's nothing fantastic there.

Schererville would probably be ok too

We have or had a fella who was in the same situation on the boards recently and moved to Whiting from Texas and seemed to be okey dokey with it. Look up postings from juicegoose and you'll get good info!

Thanks for the replies. Whiting seems like a nice little town although I did notice that just about all of the housing is really old. I am leaning toward renting anyways so it doesn't really matter. There seem to be quite a few apartments for rent...and I was surprised that rent to see that monthly rent is quite reasonable considering the town's proximity to Chicago.

I haven't ruled out Schererville either. How long does it take to drive from Schererville to Whiting? Does anyone know if there a gym in Whiting? Are there any "bad" neighborhoods in Whiting? Thanks for all the info!

I'll tell you, driving up and down Indianapolis/41 every day would drive me to drink. (Which is probably not a good idea - the whole drinking & driving thing.

(The straightest shot between Schererville & Whiting would probably be 41 - depending of course on where you are in each town.

I've been staying with a relative in Valpo and the commute is getting kind of old. I tried that drive down Indianapolis Blvd and it WOULD probably drive me crazy, so Schererville is out. So I'm considering the move to Whiting as suggested above.

The question is whether to rent or buy. The houses that I found online in Whiting that are in decent shape seem kinda pricey and taxes are high, but maybe it was just the houses that I was looking at. Rent seems reasonable (around 600-700 per month). Would it be better to rent or buy in this town?
