Moving to Hauula in June and am looking around for the best way to get my kitty over there. I've taken care of all the health details (wow, lots of trouble and $$), so am interested in which airlines any of you ex-Chicagoans have used and your experiences with them. Any trouble with the temp being over 85 degrees?

You all are so generous with your time in answering stupid, repetitive questions! Thanks in advance for answering mine

Good luck with the move! I have not yet moved to HI, but I have moved cross country several times with pets - under seat & in cargo. All airlines have temp restrictions in place for pets in cargo, so my advice to is check that out first. Hopefully you won't have to do that & your kitty can go under seat. If you haven't flown with kitty before, make a "reservation" in advance as most airlines have a limit on pets in cabins.

No,"kitty" cannot go under the seat to Hawaii. No pets are allowed in the cabin on flights to Hawaii.
You might want to look into Continental - the pet safe program.

Also check United. They probably have a direct to HNL from ORD and their handling of my dogs was excellent.

I also can confirm no pets in the cabin to Hawaii. Definitely make a reservation for your pet and make it early. Make sure you tell them you will be accompanying your pet.

There are temperature restrictions; be sure to carefully check the airline web site.

We just shipped some rabbits and found it helpful to have a listing of the temperatures at all the airports the airplane would land at when checking the rabbits in. There are websites which list the daily estimated temperatures and you can print out the page.

We moved 3 cats here from Seattle at the beginning of this month. We flew Hawaiian because we trust them, their pet policy is good, and once you are on the plane it's like you are already there.

Here's the details...
The cat has to go under the plan from the mainland to Hawaii so it can be delivered to the Quarantine station by the airline staff.
There is a maximum of 3 pet Kennels per plane. This is an FAA regullation I believe.
You have to book the cat in it's kennel. Costs $225 (per Cat/Kennel).
Bring the ORIGINAL health certificates with you to the airport. Bring copies because the airline will need them, and if you already have them, saves time.

I am pretty sure the airlines list on their websites when they do not permit animals due to temp.

We had all our ducks in a row and by the time we walked from the plane to the Quarantine station, the cats were ready to go. We literally only had to wait 5min to fill out the paperwork before we got them.

Default Pet restrictions on flights to HI

MD, thanks for adding that info! I'm glad you did. Looks like I have more research to do...I had hoped I could put my cats in cargo & my chihuahuas under the seat on flight day.

Ill read through the threads to see if there are any posts on number limitations on pets in cargo per airline.

AlohaHuey,

Thank you also, I'll check out United & others!

Manolo,

Unhappy Uh oh

Sounds like I'm gonna have problems moving in June. I can't do it earlier because her 120-days won't be up till then. I'm concerned about the temperature restriction -- I guess it's time to start calling around to verify. Thanks, you guys, for all the info.

My husband brought my cats here in June (a few years ago). He flew Boston -> Chicago -> HNL with them in cargo. No problems at all. I think he was on United. When he got on the flight in Chicago, they announced "Mr. newUHprof, we just want to let you know that your friends are on board." Very nice.

The temp at HNL is usually fine, so if you can take a morning flight out of Chicago, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Don't read the old threads, CALL THE AIRLINES!
Capacity controls for animals is soly at the descretion of the air carrier and they change it based on aircraft and other factors all the time. Just like they can decide tommorrow to let a limited number of pets incabin to Hawaii. Since it changes all the time based on many things including weather, prepaid freight, or simply because they want too, you ned to be in touch with them to get CURRENT tarriffs and conditions and not based on what happend 10 years, 3 years, 9 months, 1 week or even yesterday. You alsio have to remember that even if they allow 12 animals per aircarft, they may have a standing order for 5 of those slots, have confirmed paid bookings for another 4, have a hold for 1 more, and that leaves only 2 slots left over. The sooner you can make a confirmed and paid reservation, the less chances of being turned away.
