So I am planning a move to Honolulu, and I am wondering if you folk that live there already get the vibe that people are always coming and going. I mean do you meet people and next thing you know they are gone and in comes the next tourist. I def got that feeling when I was living in Thailand on one of the islands. But thats completely different:-) Is there a good size 20 or 30 something crowd living in Honolulu. thanks for the input!!!

Yes they come, yes they go. Yes there are lots of 20s and 30s, but yes they come, yes they go.

Aloha,
You will find that alot of the residents here don't invest heart feelings in the new people that they meet even when they say that they just moved here. What I personally call the failure rate for moving here and being able to stay long term like permanently is much higher then most people from not here would expect. So if we make close personal friends and invest the heart to just turn around one day and gone. We can get into the details of why any time there are many threads here that go into this here.

Good luck Koa

Although friends come and go, no matter where you may live and for whatever the reason, you still have the experiences and friendship to remember. You can always keep in touch with those you've met.....
Good Luck!

Just curious, could anyone give an estimate as to what percentage of new arrivals (from the mainland, that is), will move back within a few years?

Well I can tell you i wont be moving back, thats for sure. I love the Island life, lived on an island off the coast of thailand and then Taiwan for close to 5 years, only came back because more money can be made here!!! But I am sure that most people that move to Hawaii end back on the mainland a few years later. I know a nurse that lived there for 6 months and came back because she missed her family too much. I suspect the main reason is family back on the mainland, but who knows:-)

I've heard many times, and I believe it, that about 50% of newcomers go back within two years. At least half the people I've met in the last 12 years have moved away. There are also some who move here, then leave then return over and over. I met one woman who had lived here 8 different times over 10 years.

Aloha,

This it what I call the failure rate. There are a ton of variables in this From my perspective in the average move ie. someone with a job or a retiree its just under 50% move back This also depends on the type of job. I do know that in Academia the failure rate is close to 75%.

To clarify this a bit. The avrage person that gets a job offer or even the chance to apply for a job their kneejerk reaction it a big resounding Yes! but after you look at the logistics of a move to the most remote part of the world you loose a large percentage. Then after the few that do make the move they run into a few issues. Like Family it could be as far as 3000 miles or up to 6000 mine is at 5600 miles away. You miss them don't get to see them as much as you want. Another is (kinda what we saw in another thread here ) is culture shock Mainlanders like there comfort things food houses roads ect. many things even small things you think you can get by but find out you can't. Kinda like insisting you have to have a basement in your house just cant live without it. they don't do well here. Then there is Island Fever...... if you like to go for a drive for hours on end and end up in lets say Vegas Hawaii isn't for you. But you can fly.

Before you move here do your home work most is here on this forum . I wanted to move here for almost 30 years got my chance did homework for almost 2 years and Im here happy as a clam.

Good luck
Koa
