I've stayed in the Hawaiian Monarch several times when my units are full. Here's a Craigslist ad.. Hawaiian Monarch Studio with Mini-Kitchenette (http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/vac/2452257870.html - broken link) bus to UH is convenient you could actually walk there in about 1/2 hour. There are quite a few ads on Craigslist for this building. http://honolulu.craigslist.org/searc...xAsk=&bedrooms= .. in Waikiki but a bit of a walk to the beach. I'd check Ohana Beach Rentals, they have rentals mostly in Gold Coast area. If you'll have some free time when you first get here I'd stay somewhere nicer like the Gold Coast so you can enjoy the beach and neighborhood. You could probably get a good deal for a couple of months stay. Deal with owners and tell them why you are a good person to rent to. Alot of people were helped when they first got here and are willing to pay it forward. I know several UH profs in the Diamond Head area, Pualei Circle and Gold Coast.
Good Luck!
