Not far, just 15 miles. But the real cost concerns are housing lease prices for an apartment. 1/1 are way too high. I am used to inconveniences and simple planning to bypass obstacles, but, not paying through the nose for obtaining a fair value ratio on residence/location is key. Some that offer ridiculously priced housing may need to "call their doctor". LOL.

Housing prices on Oahu are simply in relation to the relatively small amount of land. On Oahu, you are paying for the land. On the Big Island (East side anyway), you are paying for the house that sits on the land.

I definitely see the point. However, I can live in Charleston SC a few miles from the beach, less than half the cost of Hawaii, port, cruises, commissary, BX, little traffic, great people, cool not cold winters under 2 months total, can drive to mountains, no airfares, go space A, larger places for less than half or more, of the lease sums asked there, and , huge variety of shopping too. I guess happiness is "between the ears" , so to speak. Thank you very much !

Mostly ... and your post reinforces the reality that there are many options to consider for folks hoping for Hawai'i ... Hawai'i is just one of the very toughest nuts to crack unless you have a very unique angle to apply.

Some excellent beaches in the area of Charleston beahces to go snorkeling are Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Edisto Beach, and Kiawah Island.

Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the American South. This lively and bustling beach offers a lot in the way of water sports, like snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing. There are various places in Myrtle Beach where you can go snorkeling. Myrtle is north of Charleston on the coast.

Edisto Island near Charleston, is a peaceful, family friendly beach in South Carolina. This is an excellent beach to visit for a day of snorkeling and fun in the sun. The best place to go for snorkeling is Edisto Watersports and Tackle on Docksite Road. Ugly Ducklin' is also a terrific service for snorkeling.

Kiawah Island (about thirty-five miles south of Charleston) is yet another charming, naturally beautiful and highly entertaining place to go snorkeling. Not only does this gorgeous island have great areas for snorkeling, but there are terrific options for biking, golf, tennis, hiking, fishing, watching wildlife, diving, boating, swimming and even shopping.

PS: Kayaking is popular in the area as well.

Sorry, I thought you lived there and might know. If we all just googled our questions, then there would be no reason for this website.
Not much aloha in the Carolinas I guess.

Water Temperatures for Swimming in Charleston SC – When is the water warm enough to swim in the ocean? | I Love Charleston – The South Carolina Blog

Here is a link above, for your aloha spirit.....harbor is now 78-79 degrees. It actually took an excruciating 2 minutes to find. LOL. We call that, being "proactive", and believe that it is a national trait. BTW, aloha has a lot of meanings, including grass skirts, hanky panky, and more, see the urban dictionary sometime. LOL. As for your intended island definition, I am not a spokesperson for this area, but typically we prefer to either the asking of a question , or the response, as exhibiting "courtesy". Too, self education may best involve a number of sources, not just one. Primarily, that avenue usually provides authentication of factual data that prevents erroneous conclusions. Such would be the example listening to one media source and believing it to be THE absolute of information. Or, one person's opinion, as in"pundits" that get TV time to state the same, without elaborating awesome resume' credentials . It is what it is, nothing more. Peace and happiness!
