you might also try the Royal Grove very dated, but also very cheap and friendly staff. I have stayed at the Monarch, not bad for a cheaper place to use as a base camp. But If i could get a reservation at the "Grove" thats where I would stay. Good luck
This site below, seems to have great traveler feedback for any location, and is a good source for information and details. Royal Grove seems to have a very good long term reputation over the years.

Not only is it very affordable, the place also has a ton of character. Plus most, if not all, the rooms have balconies. It's just a couple blocks from Waikiki Beach....
Royal Grove and the Ambassador were booked solid. I also had trouble finding a vacation home rental, they were all booked. Mailes Sky Court and Hawaiian Monarch had openings around $100/day. Not bad but I kept looking.
In the end I tried Price Line and Hotwire. Found a deal on Hotwire for $80 a night with taxes (will try to find street parking). A decent two star place that will hold my stuff and give me a bed while I look for a permanent place to stay.
Thanks to everyone who helped. I was hesitant to post but you guys rock.

Parking at the Waikiki Banyan for $10/day or $60/7 days is a relative bargain for that area if you are nearby.

+1.
Parking on the Ala Wai is a bit of a bumper car scene. Can't count how many times I have seen people back in or forward until they bump the next car to know when it's time to stop.
While you are parked at the Banyan, you know your car is not going to get broken into or scraped. You are also fairly close to the Starbucks on Kalakaua and Kapahulu - Free Internet.
I am staying at the Hawaiian Monarch which (if I used googled right Hawaiian Monarch Honolulu to Waikiki Banyan Condo - Google Maps) is 1.4 miles from the Waikiki Banyan. I'm sure it is a nice walk, but I will look for something closer or pay the extra $10 a day rather than walk three miles each time I pick up and drop off the jeep.
