I have a book that talked about Waianae beaches but given the crime I don't feel safe going alone (or at all). Is the Kailua area the best?

Try Sandys, Waimanalo (the least crowded), or Kailua. Or various spots on the North Shore.

As a visitor, if you head to a beach by yourself, make sure you sit in near proximity to a lifeguard stand (not wander off to some secluded area). This advice is for your own safety, but in and out of the water.

hmmm...I think the question is ..where are you coming from? NY.. not so crowded..Socal...maybe. HI ..define crowded. Any beach in HI is 10 times better than the best beach in SoCal.

If you are military or have base access, you can't beat Hickam beach, Waianae Rest Camp, or Bellows Air Force Base. Your stuff wont' get stolen out of your car, there is a security presence and no crack heads, dirty toilets and drunks to deal with.....
