Any docs out there care to comment on what it's like practicing in Oahu? Besides the extremely high cost of living, high overhead and decreasing reimbursements are you generally happy with your decision to live and practice here? Does the cost of living adjustment really make a huge difference in your overall lifestyle and quality of life?

Lots of our doctors in Hawaii are swamped with trying to fit in sick patients to their daily schedule, doing paperwork and dictation, attending meetings and consultations, then squeezing in a bit of home life. You might not get an overwhelming response here from "docs".

I sort of figured that. If there's anyone out there that has the time to give some real and honest insight, it would be greatly appreciated.

I remember rotating at Tripler several years ago as a med student and dreaming of the possibility of one day coming back to live and work here. Now that I have the opportunity to do so, I'd like to make an educated and somewhat objective decision on whether or not to pull the trigger.

My GP commented that her two kids would be in better shape, in regards to financial aid from colleges, if she passed away.

She makes to much for them to qualify for financial aid, but she can't afford the tuition to a decent school.

Wow..that's depressing. However, that's not atypical in most major cities. It seems the cost of living is going to affect everyone...I think a lot of people have the misconception that all physicians are well off. The reality is that we are all struggling just like everyone else.
