My husband's job brought us to Oahu 2 years ago, but now I'd like to reenter the work force. I am considering private tutoring (I taught Spanish and Math on the mainland), but have no idea what the going rate is. I am not a native speaker, but have teaching & tutoring experience and a BA in Spanish.

Any advice would be helpful - if you know of a tutoring network, for example!

Take a look at Craigslist for the going rates.

Thanks for the Craigslist idea! I checked it out and most people don't include a price, but the ones that did gave me a better idea. Just wondering if anyone had personal experience with hiring a tutor for themselves or a child, since I don't want to overprice myself and offend anyone

One thing about Craigslist, once you advertise on there you will be INUNDATED with scammers. Spouse advertised on there to give music lessons and we soon abandoned it, because the ONLY respondents were scammers. I then posted the scammers' various and sundry e-mails and e-mail addresses and heard from dozens of other tutors who told me that the ONLY people who ever replied to their tutoring ads were scammers.

When we have used private tutors, we have chosen them via a recommendation from a teacher or school official, or through a professional organization related to the learning disability or the specific problem/need/interest. As a parent, I'd not have hired a "stranger" that was not recommended by someone I trusted.

I am not familiar with there being a tutoring network, but others might chime in with something.

Good luck with finding a way to connect with students that need your help.
