Thanks for posting the link, because it clarified that the blurb referred to Honolulu, and the full list included New York, San Francisco, San Diego, and the rest of the 10 US cities with the highest costs of living. No big surprise there.
That is surprising. I was surprised to see Poughkeepsie, NY on there as well. I went to college there, and the area did not seem expensive, especially compared to Honolulu, Fairfield County CT and the others on that list.
I'm heading for retirement lickety split. I had to click on the related article about the 10 best places. It really is all about stretching the retirement dollar. San Antonio is looking better and better!
I finally had time to read the article and I am wondering, why are people who are retired still paying rent or a mortgage payment? Seems like really poor planning to me!

People planning? You haven't been reading the Hawaii forum much - the $10K in savings - the move with no skills - the impulsive folks - the dreamers - etc, etc....for every planner we see on the Hawaii forum it seems we have 100 feversh and desperate people trying to get to Hawaii regardless of the price they pay because they can't take another winter.

If people move for retirement, it's likely they could become renters or buy a new house and get another mortgage. A wise investment plan can be much better than necessarily living rent- or mortgage-free.
