In my other thread someone brought up that there are power outages on the island, and this may effect my decision to get a freezer. Since I haven't gotten much input on that thread I thought it may get more views and replies at its own thread.

Do power outages happen often on Oahu? Are there particular areas more likely to have power outages? How long do these outages typically last?

Thanks in advance.

~Katy

Often - no. But we've had a couple of nasty ones, and fortunately we haven't had a real bad one in quite sometime. In 2006 during the Big Island earthquake and in 2008 during a severe thunderstorm (when ironically Obama had just gotten to Oahu right after he got elected for his traditional Christmas vacation) were multi-day island wide outages.

Other than those examples, we get the typical outages in neighborhoods that you see anywhere on the mainland whether that be a car running into a power pole or a transformer blowing. Those are isolated, infrequent, and usually last an hour or two at most.

Thanks! Seems like it really wouldn't be a concern, then.

Storm, eh? keep me updated. I love a good storm so hearing about one passing by Hawaii makes me happy. Yes, I am strange.

They are only fun if no one gets hurt, and no houses are badly damaged. But, barring those two circumstances, yes, they can be awe inspiring.
