I want the inside scoop on where to buy "affordable", quality groceries for my family of 5 while living in Oahu. I love my Trader Joe's here on the mainland but sadly they have not set up shop there yet. I guess I will have to forsake the organic options that we are used to. I plan on shopping at Costco for milk/eggs and other provisions since we consume quite a bit of dairy with small kids. I hear a gallon of milk runs $5.00-$9.00? Walmart can be good? Apply for the club cards at the chain markets? I am not great at coupons...but maybe I need to try them. I am determined to keep our healthy diet the same, but need to get smart on where to shop. Wholefoods is whole-paycheck...so on a limited basis. KCC Farmer's market....but are the prices any better? I would like to support local growers if I can.

Any insight from other families would be great. I also plan on packing my children's school lunch. My food shopping bill averages about $175/week. I am hopeful I can budget something similar in HI.

Thanks!

I had a thread on this with some good responses. You may want to search for it. From the info I got it's an increase of about 30% there for groceries. I also looked at the sales ads online for certain stores to get a feel of the prices. Basically, what I found was that the sale prices are about the same as the normal mainland prices here in Alabama. I haven't tried coupons before but I'm hoping to get used to using them before we move! HTH!

Safeway has their store card, Food land the same 5-10% off. Just depends who is close when i need to go to the store. I have both. Check into Times supermarket for there discount card also, i do not shop there, not one close where i live. I am also Sam Club member. You already have chosen Costco so that is good.
Hope that helps.
Scott

In the Memphis area, there are a couple dozen Super Walmarts. I haven't seen one here that compares but maybe I just haven't tried looking too hard. I know in CT there weren't any either.

We always hit the Safeway's 50% off of the dairy items when they're close to sell-by date. I can shop on base and that saves alot on some items.

I think ya get used to watching sale flyers and figuring out what's not to bad in price. We found a great fish market in Waipahu. I'm sure there are more. Making a habit of eating less isn't a bad thing!

Nationally, Target made announcements that they were going to drop prices on their food to compete strongly against Walmart. Target has already lowered a lot of food prices on the Big Island.

There are two main chains of Organic stores, Whole Paycheck (lol), and Down to Earth (strictly vegan only). Both have several locations on island.

For day to day groceries we have found that some things are better at some stores than others:
Target - Excellent Meats, and some fresh produce, especially their Apple Bananas
Costco - Bulk items. They seem to be having more and more fresh produce and organic foods
Times Market - Another good spot for good affordable meats. They also have a variety of produce that some of the other stores don't have
Safeway - About everything else. Having a club card and watching their sales makes a difference
Wal Mart - Rice and a couple other items. Wathing the labels on Wal Mart food stopped us from getting alot of things there
Foodland - They have some great beer choices and some of the best fresh Poke.

A gallon of milk at Safeway is usually about $4.95 or so.

You have some great suggestions from posters. Don't forget the local farmer's markets.

There is also Chinatown for vegetables as well as the local Filipino markets. They have excellent prices on vegetables as well as other interesting options of things to buy that you didn't even know existed. However, they are usually small and not exactly your mainstream type markets.
