Does anyone know what is the status of the repair project and the road re-opening is? The last news I can see is from 2011. Also, I hear mixed reports about whether you need a military id or not?

The last I heard there were no plans to reopen the road. In the event the road ever reopens you would need military ID to use the road. Civilian ID working on base would not be good enough.

I got drive over Kolekole pass in 91 or 92 with my girlfriend at the time. Her dad was in the National Guard and had the right stickers on the car. After 9/11, I imagine stickers aren't enough and you need someone with military ID. But mayb just finding a friend with ID would work.

I do remember the road being pretty, but wish I'd taken more pictures. Youth is wasted on the young, as they say.

Thanks for the replies. I thought maybe since they got 2.5 million from the Feds (DOT not DOD) and they were talking about it being an evacuation route for the leeward side, they might have made some progress. Oh well ...
