Great info! Thanks everyone!!

Another related question....is it cheaper to get a used vehicle on Oahu rather than ship one over? We can sell our vehicle (2003 Dodge) here before we move, but I don't want to get there and pay a fortune for one either. I know it'll be around $1100 to ship.....

Personally I haven't found the car prices here much different from the mainland ( other than the new car dealer markups!) unless you have something valuable or special to you. I'd sell yours. Military families are leaving often and you can get a good deal. Check out craigslist and see what's comparable to your Dodge. We found it was very easy and cheap to get the title transferred into our name also.

When your vehicle arrives, you have 30 days in which to either register it with Hawaii plates, etc. or you can pay a small (about $5-$10) fee and fill out a short form and Hawaii will let you use your current out-of-state registration until it expires.

But...and follow this in order...

Get a actual Hawaii insurance card. Your insurance card from another state, even if with the same company, will not work.

Get a safety inspection. It costs $15. You cannot get the safety (which is a joke from most independent shops, stay away from dealers and chain stores) without having the Hawaii insurance card. Bring your shipping papers with you.

However, here's the great Hawaii part; your vehicle will fail the safety because you don't have registration. This is OK. Take the failed safety form which shows that the only reason you failed is due to invalid registration, to the DMV, along with your insurance card and shipping papers, pay the small fee and fill out the short form. They give you a piece of paper....then...

You go back to the safety inspection place, show them you now have registration... and you get a sticker!

Nowhere will you find out how much your vehicle will cost until you get to the DMV. They apparently use a super-secret weight formula. Oahu has a much higher set of fees than the other counties.

My opinion has always been that if you have a paid off vehicle, you know it runs good, you know it's "issues", then ship it. The cost of selling and buying a vehicle is usually more than shipping one when you factor in the cut of the salesman/dealership/price reduction on craigslist. Just my opinion.

I have never regretted shipping my vehicle. We did sell my wife's car, as we only need 1 car here.
