Can anyone provide info regarding the approximate cost of registering and titling a vehicle (not a SUV) on Oahu? Inspection/emission tests needed? And if so, approximate cost? No lienholder involved. Coming to Oahu from the mainland....

Mahalo!!

Moved with similar situation but with a SUV a couple years ago. The fees then:

$15 inspection at just about any mechanic, Jiffy Lube included.
$25 for the plates.

The registration in your state will be good until it expires, then you pay the hawaii registration fee. The fee here is based upon weight of the vehicle. $303 this year for mine.

How about the year of the vehicle? The calculator they have on their website says to call for registration price.

I just got a steep registration bill. (couple hundred)

I don't know if it's a car you have or planning to get but the Safety Inspection here isn't just lights-wipers-horn. We had a small tear in the cv joint boot and had to get that replaced to pass the inspection (at Firestone).

Dthraco - How can my current registration be good til it expires, which would be July 2014 ? Don't I have to register it in Hawaii within like 30 or 60 days upon picking it up from Matson?

Yes, your car does have to be registered within 30 days of it arriving in Hawaii. Make sure you take your Bill of Lading with you when you go to the DMV.

You pay Hawaii a fee to register your car, but they basically credit you for the time left on your mainland registration. So the first time you pay the very minimal fee, and then your renewal date will be your original plate expiration date.

Hopefully you've read through the whole process regarding inspection and registration. It is confusing. Also note that the inspection expiration date can be different from the license expiration date, so you have to keep on top of that yourself.

^^ this.

By the second week I was here I had my HI drivers license and HI license plates on the car. The process was delightfully quick inexpensive and easy compared to WA state's process.

They did some crazy in depth inspection on my car too! I went somewhere else.
