A belated update. We had a great day on Oahu. Got up early, hiked Diamond Head -- it was amazing and not too rough for us -- then found our way to Leonard's for amazing malasadas. After that a brisk walk on the beach at Waikiki, then a quick trip to the art museum where we had a nice lunch. We spent the rest of the afternoon at Pearl Harbor including the USS Arizona tour. It was a really moving experience. After that we drove to the airport only to find our flight delayed (never again will I fly on Go Airlines). Thanks again, everyone, for the advice!
Glad you had a good time; I replied your post without knowing that you have
already been there/done that!
After so many trips to Oahu, I've yet to check out the Arizona memorial or any
of the ships there. Always too many other things to do or just too tired to move.
But hey, hopefully once I move here, I'll get some time to see it.
Go is terrible; and they were only a few $s cheaper than Hawaiian. I've had only
1 experience with them and will never ever use them again (I think they purposely
canceled my flight because it wasn't full enough which delayed me some hours).
That's news to me and it's too bad! We flew Go! from Kahului to Honolulu and from Honolulu to Kona. The only problem was the overhead bins were very tiny, but there was enough space under the seats for the carry on luggage. The aircraft was a little small, but pretty quiet. The crew were very friendly. Both flights were very nice.

They lost money every year they did business I Hawaii. They had the highest cancellation rate and worst on time performance. All recipes for disaster. Even the last flight from Hilo to Honolulu was multiple hours late. They flew the last flight 6 years exactly when Aloha stopped flying which was very ironic.
I'd rent a car; it'll give you somewhere to put your luggage.
There's no need to rent a car to keep your luggage, and given the high rate of rental care breakins, I don't think it's terribly wise. Instead, for a small fee you can usually check your luggage with the bellman at the hotel. If not, there is a luggage check service at the airport so you can do tourist things without schlepping your luggage around with you.

That's what we did. We weren't leaving the island hours after the check out time. The hotel simply stored our luggage. It was a free service.
Storing your luggage in a vehicle is even more risky if it is a minivan, SUV, or if all the luggage doesn't fit in the trunk. If the criminal can see luggage when looking in the vehicle's windows, it's more likely to be stolen.
