Been away from the thread for a while, but racism, at it's root, is a type of classism. However, the comparison has nothing to with race per se, or racism specifically.

Reference my comparison of HI & MS:

MS and HI are similar in their political structure (essentially one party wrt power and control), economic structure (a few families control the levers of power and hold on tenaciously), education levels (poor public schools with some glittering exceptions in private schools), population size (HI is smaller), racial minorities as large percentage of the population (not a black white think or a white Polynesian thing, just an anomoly that minority populations nationally are significantly over represented populations in the two states), strong cultural heritage that is different from the U.S. generally, etc., ad nauseum.

Chinatown honolulu has always had and interesting and sometimes dark history. Heres a look at an area that had a bad reputation for awhile.

The only real way to understand an area and its people is to understand their history, culture and customs.

I wouldn't say it has a good reputation today - A lot of Chinatown is still very sketchy especially at night.

It was okay for a while, but after my last trip there I won't go back for dinner or cocktails. If I'm in the area I'll shop in the produce markets... maybe.

I feel similar. I do enjoy going down there to buy fruit and i enjoy going there during the day. I've occasionally gone at night for dinner and it can still get sketchy quickly.

Lol ok any thoughts on the historical aspicts? Maybe same same today as past?

Idk, i would goto chinatown to celebrate chinese newyear, they also have some of the best asian bakeries and last i heard you can only get the famous chinese mooncake there now. Also there is some good historical stuff still there too.
