I don't think there is anything on the island within walking distance of the beach for 500-600K. Well, perhaps Waianae side....

Probably the best way to find the perfect spot would be to rent as close to your husband's work or within a close commute range and then look around at different areas while you're on the island. It's really difficult to find the right spot when you're not on the island. You can usually get to a beach pretty easily and that's usually a weekend thing. Being close to work which is a daily thing is usually more important.
Is it only 30 minutes from Kailua to the airport? Doesn't it get traffic on the Pali during rush hour? Then once you get into town, there's usually gridlock so from the Pali to the airport is gonna take fifteen to twenty minutes, I'd expect?

We have this beautiful highway called H3 - which never is subject to rush hour, most people go 70+ mph. Even when you come off H3 onto H1, there is no traffic on that stretch in the morning. In the evening, you get about 2 miles of traffic on H1 to the H3 exit but it still goes relatively smooth.
You normally wouldn't take the Pali to the airport unless there was an accident - and even then, I'd probably take the Likelike.
Man, my branes are on Hawaiian time. I used to go from Diamond Head to Wahiawa door to door in 30 minutes, H-1 to H-2! And I would be the only car on H-2.

H-2 itself isn't very busy. (Except the morning merge). H-1 is the problem.
We figured it would be a good plan for him to go first and rent in a couple different places and get a feel of the island and see which neighborhood would be a good fit. I read Kailua is on the rainy side .. Alittle cooler ...run air less...does it rain a lot or is it that brief afternoon rain.
