"Whelan and Waste Management of Hawaii caused the discharge of millions of gallons of contaminated storm water to the coastal waters near the Ko Olina beach resort for several hours that evening and/or into the morning of January 13 without authorization from the health department. The pollutants included large amounts of medical waste, including blood vials, syringes and catheters, raw sewage and sewage sludge."

I'm not in Hawaii yet, but come to think of it, a million people on Oahu and that is a lot of trash. Are there real concerns about contamination from waste management and landfills? Is this overblown? How many landfills are there and where?

@seoulja

Aloha,

Its just an Grand jury indictment at this stage. To be honest if the aligations are true? Then this is just another of many examples of big business cutting safety measures in favor of profits, who suffers? Our aina, the taxpayers and the Beauty of the islands.

When are people going to say enough is enough? Building buildings higher then legal, dumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of molasses into the oceans, dumping other toxins that kill ocean animals and causing the extinction/endangerment of hundreds of animals, birds, plants etc of the islands in the name of saving or making a buck by cutting safety measures etc.

These are the examples of foreign influences on the islands unchecked and unchallenged and the local governments behavior of catering to special interests. No one whats to deny anyone the freedoms of our country. But with freedoms comes responsibility. All these situations are is attitude issues and can be changed by the majority of the islands social society.

Last I checked - you can't build a building "higher than legal". You get a variance - it gets approved - it is legal. From my perspective - don't build. That will just drive real estate much higher than they are now - works for me.

Anyway, this is a common practice among big cities in the United States.

Is it your allegation it was done on purpose? Why would they do that? Did they have to much molasses and didn't know what to do with it?

The Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA) is currently spearheading the construction of a 650 foot skyscraper on 690 Pohukaina St.* The current height limit is 400 feet.* The community should know that if this project goes through and the height limit is increased to 650 feet, many more skyscrapers will go up in Kaka’ako.

The Public Land Development Corporation (PLDC) is an example of the government pushing through construction projects without important public scrutiny.* The PLDC, created in 2011 by the legislature (Act 55), has the authority to develop public lands without having to follow permitting and zoning laws.

Continued from last post:

@whtviper1 *

Because of this, citizens do not have the ability to have input or control over any of the development that will be happening in their neighborhood on government land.

The community should not be left in the dark about the plans. Further i was under the impression that the height limit was put into place for preservation of Hawai'is landscape?

The Honolulu molasses spill refers to a spill of 1,400 tons of molasses into Honolulu Harbor in September 2013. It was caused by a FAULTY PIPE! Thus was caused by not doing regular safety checks on the pipes. Prob because it was cheaper to not do so.

What is it then? Foreigners, does it matter what race?

But it ignores the legal intent of the building hight laws passed. Now you have to ask who is really spearheading the lifting of height limits? Its the Foreign special interest. Whtviper i think your misunderstanding my position. Im not against business or big business or there freedom to do business. What im against is irresponsible, no care for community or others attitudes. This is a thinking and attitude issue and will only change when we quit making excuses or rationalise these attitudes. Anyway aloha and good day.

Dude get over the race thing ok, its an attitude and thinking problem, the reason why foreigners and mainlanders are brought up the most is because these attitudes are more common to those groups regarding the effects they have on Hawai'i. And yes its mostly foreign money that ownes the big business and resorts, corporations.
