First question our recruiters always ask -

"So - how long have you lived in Hawaii"

Answer - "I'm in the process of moving"

End of interview. And that candidate is crossed off the list.

Next.

A cover letter with your actual living circumstances and intentions will always go further than deception.

This. +1

And to offer some encouragement from experience -- I sent off a resume to a local company (your company, actually, whtviper1! at least the company that some other poster hinted you working at!) and put at top, before my summary, that I was relocating to Honolulu in June 2014. I mentioned that again in my cover letter.

Surprisingly, happily and excitedly - I actually got a call back and they were very accommodating (scheduling calls/Skype that are EST friendly). I was able to talk freely about my plans to relocate - why, when, even that at that time our move date wasn't finalized yet. It wasn't a good fit and I didn't get an offer BUT, it was such a pleasant and encouraging experience that I consider it a 'success' nonetheless. (I was worried about the job market and my career - being in a specialism that usually only 500+HC companies have a need for.)

We see it as a grand adventure - high risk (and high cost) but, could also offer very high rewards (lifestyle-wise). Save, plan accordingly and make it work.

Thank you for this tip. And thanks for everyone for the advice. I will add this to the plan and see what comes up. It's still 6 months away, but I definitely want to have everything going in the right direction

But this isn't a unique to Hawaii thing. If i lived in the west coast and my potential employer lives east coast or other regions. The first thing an employer will ask is when will i move or how long have i lived in etc. If i said im in the process of moving i would cross you off the list too for being flacky and no stability.
