Please don't chastise me for my stupidity, but I lost my wallet with my California DL the other day. since I'm moving to Oahu in less than 10 days, I wanted to ask if I should (or if it's even possible to) just go to Hawaii without a license to surrender and just take the required test(s)/picture for the new Hawaii license?

tl;dr can I apply for a Hawaii DL without a current license to surrender?

I have my passport, utility/rental lease with my name and address on it, and my birth certificate.

This is actually the first time I have ever lost my wallet so I'm kind of freaking out.

It would be far easier to just go to the California DMV and get a replacement license.

I agree with this particularly if you have a different name than what's on your birth cert (marriage?). I had SS card, Military ID card, DoD ID card, Passport all with my current name. Plus my expired MS license. AND my birth cert. No dice. The thought of gathering my marriage and divorce certs from my past simply killed me. I need to do that anyway but it's going to take a while. Came to GA and my passport did the trick.

But if I receive the temporary paper license from the DMV, can I use that to surrender to the DMV office in HI if I don't get my physical license before I move?

I doubt you can surrender a paper license. The CA DMV can send the new license to Hawaii.

Are you here on Oahu or still in CA?
You have to hold a valid CA Drivers License to make the change, in Hawaii. Every one has to be on the nation wide data base now days.
Agree with the above posts. Get a replacement license from CA DMV, and have your replacement license mailed to Oahu. You can still drive with the paper temp license until the replacement arrives.

You don't need a physical license to get a HI drivers license. If you know you're CA driver's license # they can look it up. All you need to do is have the correct paper work and take the written test. Once you pass you will get your HI license #. Just make sure to study cause some of the laws are different here.

I believe that you can only get replacement CA driver's license in the DMV office so they can look at your required paper work.

Also, you do have to have a govt. issued copy of your Social Security Card as well as 2 forms of proof of Hi residency. That may include a rental agreement of at least 6 months, a local bank account showing your local address, and bills from electric, telephone, or cable, in your name.
The DL handbook is not available at the DMV. You can get it at the chain drugstores for about $4.95. The handbook for a motorcycle or commercial license is available only at the DMV. Study them. Many questions pertain to local issues that common sense won't answer.
When you are issued a temporary license, you must surrender your previous license. Although the temporary looks just like the real thing, including your picture, I was told that it is not valid for air or cruise travel. Plan accordingly if you don't have passport.
Aside from local's discounts there is really no rush that I can see to get a Hi. license. Many snowbirds spend much of the year here, annually, without ever changing over. Others apply for a Hawaii I.D. Card for the discounts and retain their original D.L.

You know, I studied and studied for the written test here on Maui, and figured I'd get 100%. However, as much as I studied and memorized all the answers, I was totally un-prepared for question #38, which is as follows, and may only apply to the Maui test. Here's the question;

You're driving along a two lane road on Maui, the weather is perfect, and, in front of you is a relatively new Mustang convertible being operated by a grey haired man in his mid to late 70's, seated next to him is a grey haired woman of similar age. Their car is going the speed limit, when, suddenly, the woman starts becoming hysterical, and is yelling at the driver, pointing to what appears to be a map. Their car slows, then speeds up, and the convertible top begins to go up, then down, then back up again. You should respond by,

A: Signaling to pass, then passing when traffic is safe to do so
B: Sounding your horn, and throwing them the one finger shaka
C: Turning on your radio and getting the weather report
D: None of the above. You're on the road to Hana, and another 100 mustangs, being driven by an identical couple, are ahead of you, doing variations of the same thing.

I thought C made the most sense, where did I go wrong?

Aloha and okole, uuuurrrpppp, scuze me, maluna
