Do elements of Hawaii feel a connection with New Zealand?

I haven't heard of any direct connection with them, of people going back and forth between the two. But I do find it interesting that for many Pacific Islands, basically Honolulu and Auckland are the two MAIN places to either emigrate or go to study, if someone were to come from, I dont know, Micronesia, for example, and wanted to get to another big city.

Which do you think has more importance for the Pacific Islands?

Auckland???????????????

Having been to Auckland at least 15 times, Honolulu and Auckland are complete opposites - like zero connection.

I could get the connection to Japan as a connection or the Philippines, even Taiwan for Pacific Islands aligned to Hawaii - but Auckland?

Can you explain in what way they are opposites?

I haven't been to Auckland.

But both NZ and HI, are both major draws for Pacific Islanders...for education, jobs, emigrating, etc.

The majority of the population is of European descent (over 70%). Much like Australia. Pacific Islanders make up less than 10% of the population.

The Queen of England is the head of state.

It has 4 times the population of Hawaii.

Want to go to a good pub - head to Auckland, don't go to Hawaii.

But seriously, nothing about New Zealand would remotely remind you of Hawaii.

Except the Maori, the Asians, the Pacific Islanders...

I'm looking here: Demographics of Auckland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For Auckland, it seems the European descent is more like 55-60%, and 40-45% are Asian, Maori or Pacific Islanders....

Auckland would have more of the Maori, Islanders, and Asians, than the country as a whole, which would dilute the 70% caucasian, when you are in the capital city.

BUT, I haven't been to Auckland....so maybe when you are there, it looks more white/european/british/australian. I just always had the impression that the Maori population is quite mixed in, and visible. In addition to Pacific Islanders and Asians who emigrate there.

Also, we aren't comparing NZ and HI.

We're comparing Auckland's metro area 1.3 million versus Honolulu's 900,000 (metro area)...it is somewhat comparable. I mean, depends how we define Honolulu...statistically like 350,000...but the metro area is getting closer to a million.

For comparison purposes, it makes sense to compare the metro populations.

New Zealand would disagree with you: Lets look the census.

The percentage of the population who identified themselves as belonging to the Māori ethnic group in 2013 (14.9 percent or 598,605 people) was similar to that of the 2006 Census (14.6 percent or 565,326 people).
Pacific peoples made up 7.4 percent of the population in 2013, which was a slight increase from 6.9 percent in 2006.
Nearly three-quarters of the population (74.0 percent) identified themselves as being of European ethnicity, which was an increase from 67.6 percent in 2006. This increase seems to be partly due to fewer people identifying themselves as 'New Zealander'.
In 2013, 65,973 people identified as 'New Zealander' on their census form, compared with 429,429 people in 2006. There was a media campaign in 2006 that encouraged people to give the response 'New Zealander'.

Again, we are comparing Honolulu with Auckland.

Not HI & NZ.

Regardless - it is dominated by a European descent population. The look and feel is very European/British.

When was the last time you were in Auckland?

Pretty much every newspaper article I read talks about how Auckland is a magnet for Asians and Pacific Islanders...

This one in 2012 stated that minorities will outnumber shortly, with only 51% white by 2016. I think quite consistently, everything I read seems to say exactly that as well about Auckland. White faces will soon be a minority - National - NZ Herald News

I do believe that whenever you were there, it probably was predominately European, and I think years ago, Australia had a white-only policy as well, for quite some time. But somewhere along the way, they opened up the doors, much like Canada also had a white-only policy, and things have changed drastically.
