Originally I was happy to see the old International Marketplace taken down because it had become pretty trashy. However, oddly enough, once it was torn down, it felt really weird passing by and not seeing it any more. I actually kind of missed not seeing it any more because, if nothing else, it was different.
So I'm now hopeful that the replacement, once open, will be open and inviting and somehow retain some of the feel of the old place. I know they're saving a few of the trees and creating some open space areas. So hopefully that will help build a nice and interesting space that simply feels more interesting inside than just another mall.
I recall taking the spouse's very ancient uncle down there several years ago. He had not been to the Waikiki neighborhood in quite some time, and wanted to see what was happening. It was an early Saturday morning, and we very slowly strolled
Kalakaua Ave. He wanted to 'pop into' the International Market, and of course we obliged him. My wife and I were
rubbernecking and lost her elderly uncle. We had that sudden moment of panic, but we quickly found him. He was
patting the head of an English Bulldog statue situated in from of one of the kiosks/storefronts. At first glance, it
did look pretty realistic. I have always wondered what happened to that statue. Anyone remember seeing it in the
market?
I suspect if one person took a look at the plans of the new international market place and compared them to the new ewa wing of Ala Moana Center. You will find they look almost the same in design. I just noticed that the other day when looking at the digital video of what the projects would look like when done.
